Our History

Heritage Golf Group (HGG), LLC was founded in November 1999, with the intent of building a leading boutique golf course company through the acquisition of select high-end daily fee, resort and private golf courses. For more than 15 years, Heritage Golf Group’s management team has developed customized facilities and tailored operational systems to augment each club’s one-of-a-kind assets. We are constantly expanding our team of experts in operations, training, culinary, fitness, agronomics, lodging, golf, and special events. We are revolutionizing the conventional concept of the country club while maintaining the tradition of the game. Our commitment to deliver an exceptional experience for our members and guests stems from our passion for hospitality, which is shared by our staff.

Our current portfolio consists of three resort properties on Hilton Head Island (Port Royal Golf Club, Oyster Reef Golf Club, and Shipyard Golf Club), two championship TPC clubs in Florida (TPC Prestancia and TPC Tampa Bay), a daily fee facility in Texas (Meadowbrook Farms), a private club in Virginia (The Dominion Club), and our flagship private club, Champions Retreat (Evans, Georgia).

Backed by the financial strength of Tower Three Partners (an operations-oriented private equity firm) Heritage Golf Group is uniquely poised to expand through the acquisition of a tightly focused and selective group of first-rate clubs. Under the leadership of our president, John Hungerford, Heritage Golf Group is evolving the private country club experience to the highest level by honoring current traditions while enhancing and elevating the member experience.

Shipyard Plantation History

The Shipyard Plantation has changed hands many times over the years, but it is one of only two plantations to retain its antebellum name. A bricklayer from Dublin, Ireland, named Henry Talbot-Talbird is the first recorded owner of the 1,765-acre property in the early 1700s. Because bricks were manufactured on the property, including those used in building the third Tybee Island Lighthouse, it came to be known as the “Brickyard Plantation.” After the Revolutionary War, the plantation was home to the Fickling family, who were shipbuilders. The estate then became known as the “Fickling Plantation” and the “Shipyard Plantation.”
